Although Tavistock was bathed in sunshine yesterday , we drove through horrendous weather on the A30 to play cricket at Truro.

The match started with the toss and we decided to field first.

With a slightly different format to normal, the boys got stuck straight in. The bowling was more consistent this week with only 7 wides being bowled. We managed to restrict the Home team to 144 runs for the loss of 2 wickets. The two wickets were taken by Joe Wheeldon and Ben Pitts, with a great catch by Jack Lane.

It was then our opportunity to bat and with Oliver Hawkins and Henry Bennett opening the innings we got off to a steady start. Next came Josh Lancashire and Thomas Birchell who played some good shots but struggled to really penetrate the field. Then came Joe and Ben Pitts who played some expansive shots also finding it difficult to get past the Truro fielders. However some positive running helped them add to out total. With our last pair to bat we were still 16 runs behind the target. In stepped Ben Allsop and Jack Lane and with some awesome striking which was supported by great running, they got us to within 4 runs of the total score with 4 balls left . A wide got us within 2 and a lovely shot by Ben took us passed their score. However, a wicket at this point could easily have cost us the match so, with great thought Ben defended the last two balls and with a no-ball from the last ball we won with 146 runs for the loss of only 3 wickets.

This was a great game and all the boys played well and enjoyed a great match tea before the return journey to Kelly.

On Friday May 10th the year three children from Kelly Prep school ventured to the North Devon coast with the aim of consolidating their learning about rock formations which they have been studying in Science.

Despite the wild weather, the tides were right and with warm clothing their first stop was Milook near Widemouth Bay. The impressive cliffs demonstrate many rock features and the children were excited to see the things they had been learning about first hand.

The group then travelled down the coast to Trebarwith Strand another very rocky beach. Here the group looked at the effects of the water from the stream and the sea where rocks have been eroded. The children found the caves spectacular and had great fun splashing around in the pools despite the chilly weather.

The day finished with a quick dip and of course, an ice cream!

A valuable and memorable day.

The U9 boys cricket team travelled to Exeter County ground on Thursday 2nd May .

It was a gorgeous afternoon, we had taken our U9 A and B Rounders teams as well as our U9 A and B cricket teams so there were nearly 70 children playing competitive matches at the ground.

The A team batted first with Jack Lane and Christopher Wrey starting well with Jack hitting a great 4 early on. Then came Jamie Brew and Oliver Hawkins who found the Exeter bowlers quite tricky. Our next pair were Ben Pitts and Joseph Wheeldon who batted well, but who also struggled to find decent contact with the ball. Even with the help of Ben Allsop, last week’s hero, we struggled with the width from the Exeter bowlers meaning that along with debutant Benedict Bailey we posted a total of 244 for the loss of only 4 wickets.

The Exeter innings got off to a quick start but they were pegged back by some good bowling by Ben Allsop who took 2 wickets in his spell. Jamie and Ben Bailey both bowled well in their first matches, with Oliver Hawkins bowling some tight lines and Ben Pitts, when pitching the ball in the correct place, was a real handful for the opposition. Joe took a couple of wickets in his second spell, as did Ben Allsop. There was some great fielding from Christopher and Jack but we failed to prevent Exeter reaching our total.

It was a great game again and has enabled all U9 boys to have played a competitive cricket match already this term.

Next week the A team will travel to Trinity School in Teignmouth.

It has been a busy week for the Year Six pupils – with the May 2013 Public Speaking Competition. Twenty one pupils took part in this highly entertaining contest and the standard was extremely high. Mrs Shere and Mrs Martin were very proud of the level of the speaking, the sophistication of the pieces as well as the sportsmanly conduct of all the pupils.

On Wednesday we heard a variety of topics, ranging from nuclear war to ice cream, all of which were well researched and interesting to listen to. From these speeches, twelve pupils were chosen to attend the final on Thursday where we welcomed the head boy and girl from the senior school – Jonty Newton and Ellen Riis-White – to assist with the very difficult job of judging.

After a lengthy discussion a conclusion was reached and the winners were:

1st Place – Izzy Hicks and George Bott

2nd Place – Lola Francis

3rd Place – Jack Lancashire

Highly Commended – Zara Waddy and Lizzie Bennett

Well done to all those that took part, it was an outstanding level of public speaking and they should all be very proud of their speeches.
